Dont know what to call that feeling...sad?? no...aah..insecure probably...that is what I felt after reading the post.
This city has a very seamy underbelly....there is a lot of organized crime, gangsterism....most of the middle class skates on the smooth surface of the pond and doesn't realize the muck below the surface.
I have friends who are exposed to the awful things that go on here...some of them have even more incredible stories...
Wow.. misuse of power. It's universal..Then again, that does not make it any more acceptable. I guess part of the problem lies in repression and the lack of organized effort to ensure basic minimum conditions for the people. It's always the lower strata of society that gets hurt the most.. Mostly cause they cannot do a thing.. Sad, really..
Read the post and the comments. Great writing by Preran. The problems are endemic. Poorly paid and poorly treated policemen look for authority and solvable problems. These opportunities appear to them in the form of cabbies. Who really aren't the main problems.
We can write, but what we can DO about it ? That is a question worth asking and then worth answering and acting upon.
Frankly, at this point, I am beginning to feel overwhelmed. I started to reply to you and realize it's becoming a new post...read it when you can.
